Homemade Cardamom Syrup
We're back at it with your favorite herbalist's amazing homemade syrup recipes! This time, Chelsea is bringing you the decadent homemade cardamom syrup recipe as a part of our homemade syrup series. I'm sure you can already smell the unforgettable, aromatic, and exotic essence of cardamom! I can taste it already as I type this. YUM! This homemade syrup is bright, yet cozy, but can be used to make incredibly delicious coffee, tea, desserts, tonics, baked goods, and more! Not to mention this recipe is insanely easy and much more natural and healthy than chemical-filled store-bought alternatives. Check out our other homemade syrups in this series: homemade vanilla bean, homemade rose syrup, homemade apple spice syrup, homemade elderberry syrup, & homemade lavender syrup! Okay, here we go!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of sugar (I use organic cane sugar which makes the syrup more on the brown side) which doesn't bother us.
- 1 cup of distilled water (tap is fine but shelf life won't be very long if not kept in the fridge) I have only used distilled and it can easily last for a full 7-10 days outside of the fridge. We usually use it up before then.
- 1/4 cup cardamom seeds
- Rinds from one lemon
- Cinnamon stick
Directions:
- Bring water and sugar to a simmer.
- Add in toasted cardamom seeds (seed video above) once sugar is dissolved, plus rinds from one lemon and a cinnamon stick.
- Simmer on low for ten mins stirring periodically.
- Turn the heat off and once it cools completely, strain the liquid and store in a glass container as shown in the video.
*1 tbsp. per 12 ounces is a good ratio to start out with! Adjust to your preferred strength and sweetness level.
*P.S. If you're feeling extra adventurous, combine this syrup with our homemade vanilla bean syrup or our homemade rose syrup! Recipes with videos are on the blog.
